Question
solve 2x-y=y for x

Answer
To solve an equation for x, make sure all of the terms with x in them are on one side.
The only term seen here is the 2x, and it's on the left side, so that's OK.

The next thing to do is put all of the other terms on the opposite side as the x terms.
Since there is a 2x on the left, we don't want the -y there, so add y to both sides.
This gives 2x-y+y = y+y, and that is 2x = 2y.

Lastly, divide by the constant in front of the x; here, it is 2.
Dividing both sides by 2 gives 2x/2 = 2y/2, and since 2/2 = 1, this is the same as x = y.
