Question
5 - m = 13

solve for m

Answer
Take 5 - m = 13 and add m - 13 to both sides.
This gives 5 - m + m - 13 = 13 + m - 13.

One the left side of the equation, the m's cancel and 5 - 13 is -8.
On the right side, the 13 - 13 = 0, and all that's left is m.

Thus, -8 = m, or, by simply reversing the equation, m = -8.
