Question
The sum of two numbers is 119. There difference is 79. What are the numbers?

Answer
If a+b = 119 and a-b = 79, then add the two equations together and get 2a = 198.
Dividing both sides by 2 gives a = 99.

Putting this back in either equation gives 99+b = 119 and 99-b = 79.

Looking at either equation would give b = 20, for
the 1st says that b = 119-99 and the 2nd says that b = 99-79.
