using the quadratic formula find the roots of this equation: x^2-4x-6=0

Answer
The quadratic formula is x = (-b +/- sqrt(b^2 - 4ac))/(2a) for ax^2 + bx + c = 0.
In this equation, a=1, b=-4, and c=-6.

This gives (4 +/- sqrt(16+24))/2.
since 15+24=40, and the sqrt(40) = 2*sqrt(10), we have (4 +/- 2*sqrt(10))/2.

The two cancels out gives 2 +/- sqrt(10).
That is, 2 + sqrt(10) and 2 - sqrt(10).
