There are 409 tickets sold for a basketball game. The activity card-holder's ticket cost $1.75, and the non-card holder's tickets cost $2.25. The total amount of money collected was $753.75. How many of each kind of tickets were?

Let x be the number of card-holder's tickets.
This makes the number of other tickets be 409-x.

Take 1.75x + 2.25(409-x) = 753.75 and solve for x.

That is, we have 1.75x + 920.25 - 2.25x = 753.75.
Since 1.75 - 2.25 is -0.5, we have -0.5x = 753.75 - 920.25.

I believe that gives 0.5x = 166.5, but you'd better check that.
That gives x = 166.5/0.5, which looks like 333 to me.
