Question
I am in algebra 1 & I saw these two phrases. May you please tell me what each of these mean?

Answer
An equation such as 3x +2y = 5 is the equation of a straight line.
Suppose you have two such equations and you want to find a common solution.
If the other equation is 4x-2y = 9, you can find a common solution that satisfies both equations. One way is to draw both lines and see where they cross (only one place) or solve the two equations for x and y (2, -0.5).  Only one solution.
If the other equation is 3x +2y = 7 there is no solution since the two lines are parallel.
