Question
I am trying to help my neice find the answer to this equation 3 1/3x + 1 5/6 =4 1/2, but I do not know how to explain getting to the answer?  She does not have a computer, and I do not have the book in front of me to help her understand.

Answer
Hello Trisha,

I'd change the mixed numbers to improper fractions:
3 1/3x + 1 5/6 = 4 1/2 becomes
(10/3)x + 11/6 = 9/2...now subtract 11/6 from both sides:
(10/3)x = 9/2 - 11/6 ==> (10/3)x = 27/6 - 11/6
(10/3)x = 16/6 ==> (10/3)x=8/3...now multiply by 3/10
==> (3/10)(10/3)x=(3/10)(8/3)
==> 1x = 8/10 ==> x=4/5

OK?
