Question
United States production of photographic equipment and supplies in 1971
Total: $3,980 million (This is a supplementary information regarding the question below)

If the value of office copiers produced in 1971 (25% of all productions) was 30 percent higher than the corresponding value in 1970, what was the value of office copiers produced in 1970?

-> The value of office copiers produced in 1971 is $995. With this, how do I find out the value of office copiers produced in 1970?

Thanks.

Answer
Hi Kyra,

The equation looks like this:

C2 = C1 + 0.30*C1

C2 is the cost of copiers in 1971 and C1 is the cost of copiers in 1970.  It says, The cost of copiers in 1971 is equal to the cost of copiers in 1970 plus 30 percent of the the cost of copiers in 1970.  Combining the C1 terms, we can write it as

C2 = 1.3*C1

Since we know that C2 = 995, we can solve for C1 by dividing both sides by 1.3

C1 = $765

Let me know if you have any questions.
