Question
marcia Kleinz hikes down to the bottom of Bryce Canyon, overnight, and returns the next day. her hiking speed down averages 3.4 miles oer hoour. if she spent a total of 12 hours hiking, find:
a: how long it took her to reach the bottom of the conyon?
b: the total distance travled.

Answer
Hello Elisa,

Seems to me there is not enough info!

Here's is what I set-up:
let x=the one-way distance
t1=the time to go down
t2=the time to go up

since time=distance/speed,
t1=x/3.4 and t2=x/s, where s is the speed up.

since t1+t2=12, we get x/3.4 + x/s=12

So we have one equation with 2-unknowns!

Is there any more you have on this?
I suppose we could find out how deep Bryce Canyon
really is!  :-)
