Question
6y-7+6(7y-1)=35

Answer
Hi Erin,

6y-7+6(7y-1)=35

Distribute the 6 through the parentheses by multiplying it by each term.

6y - 7 + 42y - 6 = 35

combine the y terms and the non y terms on the left

48y - 13 = 35

add 13 to both sides to isolate the y term

48y = 48

divide both sides by 48 to isolate y

y = 1

Check your answer by plugging 1 in for y in the original equation.

6(1)-7+6(7(1)-1)=35

6 - 7 + 6*6 = 35

-1 + 36 = 35

35 = 35

It works.  Let me know if you have any questions.
