Allman Brothers Band/Songs at funeral
Expert: James - 1/17/2005
QuestionHello James!
I wonder what songs were performed at Duanes funeral and who they were performed by?
I've heard that Dr.John sang a tune. Is that right and if so what tune?
Sincerely Viktor
AnswerThey took Duanes Gibson Les Paul guitar and set it up in front of his casket-this cemetary is the same one shown on one of the earlier ABB lps-it is quite a famous place in Macon-quite large and old-many modern artist use this area as a foto backdrop even today-as many monuments and statues are there--all the brothers were there that day-Aretha sang-Delaney and Bonnie Bramlett sang-some of the capricorn back up singers were there as well.My step dad ran security for Phil Waldren at Capricorn studios on Mulberry St in Macon Ga-I was only a kid back then-it seems that Dr John was there but I simply can not recall what song-Boz Scaggs may have sang as well-some of the muscle shoals musicians were present-each singer took turns-some as a group some as duos some solo-it was heavily gospel oriented to fit the occassion-Will the Circle be Unbroken was one that was did-I think somone did precious memories-I can recall when ABB played for free at a local college while Duane lived-and before that they did good to eat chicken out of dempster dumpsters around town in Macon(I ilve 50 miles outside Macon now)and Duane learned Slide guitar while hospitilized-alltho the Allman boyz were actually from Tenn-they migrated here-and Capricorn also had such artists as Wet Willie and Grinderswith and Captain Beyond and Hydra and Elvin Bishop and some early work with Marshall Tucker and Charlie Daniels-the day gregg Allman made the Laid back lp they were recruiting back up female singers out on the street-and these days was written for Duane-in fact both Eat a Peach and Laid back were for Duane-and in closing I hope I was of some help-and if u never seen the brothers live-buy a ticket asap-as they are just as good in person as in the studio-and also Dr John does a fantastic performance on the Bands Last Waltz album and movie-as well as his Night Tripper album-as u may allready know-he is one of the best for that jazzy new orleans sound-
