Subject: song- Ally McBeal and Robert Downey Jr Outside

Question
QUESTION: I believe the song I am thinking of is from the episode where Calista Flockhart and Robert Downey Jr. are saying goodbye? They are outside and it's winter time and it's snowing.  A woman sings the song, it's a love song.  When they aired the show on TV they had a music video of her at the end singing the song when the credits rolled.  I used to have it on my computer years ago, and I can't remember the song- just that I loved it! It's not on any of the soundtrack albums.

ANSWER: Hi Amanda --

I'm a little confused by your question.

The song which played when Ally & Larry were outside saying goodbye in the snow was "Chances Are".  Originally written (and recorded) by Bob Seger, on the show Larry supposedly wrote that song for Ally.  It's a beautiful love song.

However, it does appear on one of the Ally McBeal albums -- the final one, "Ally McBeal: For Once In My Life", as a duet between Robert Downey Jr. and Vonda Shepard.

So I'm not sure if this is the right song or not, based on what you told me.  If it's not, please let me know and we'll try to figure out what else it could be.

cheers,

---------- FOLLOW-UP ----------

QUESTION: The last time I saw the episode was the night it aired- so I'm sure my memory isn't the best!
I know this song was not song by Vonda Shepard, it was another female artist and it was not a duet.
I remember they were standing outside together and it was night- I thought it was snowing...maybe it wasn't!  I wish I remembered more- I had the song on my computer years ago b/c someone remembered it on a blog.  I know the song is not on any ally mcbeal soundtracks, and the song was the last one played in the episode.

Answer
As far as I know, for the episodes with Larry, Vonda Shepard sang (or sang a duet) for all of the closing scenes that had music.  In fact there are probably very few episodes in general that she did not sing the final song.  That said, most of the songs were covers, and it's very possible that whoever posted the song on their blog put up the original artist and that's the copy you had.

Anyhow my next guess is that the song was called "I Will Love You", by a group called Fisher.  It was on their albums "One" and "True North".

That song was used heavily in the promos for the episode where Ally & Larry say goodbye, and it's quite possible they put the music video over the final credits.  However, I'm certain it wasn't actually played during the episode itself.

You might also try looking at
http://www.geocities.com/merrystar3/season4.htm
which is my list of all the songs that appeared on the show the season with Larry.... perhaps something will ring a bell.  The only song I'm missing from that season is from an episode after he left.  Each song page has a list of some artists who have recorded it, which might get you to the non-Vonda version.

If the song isn't there, then I think it probably was a scene with her outside with somebody who isn't Larry...

cheers,
merrystar
