I have researched and used many methods of new home construction and find this the most cost-effective, environmentally-friendly method of home building for this area. I am also investigating other alternative methods to improve my products. Alternative Housing - attic insulation

Expert: Brian McElroy - 3/13/2008

Question
QUESTION: I want to increase the insulation in my attic and have looked at a tri-laminated aluminum mylar insulation produce that is installed over your old insulation, just on the joists. What can you tell me about this type of insulation?  Thank you, Mary

ANSWER: I know nothing about it. I have never used it but in Florida, we are somewhat limited.  If you want a good answer, contact your local Trane air conditioning installer or dealer. They are well versed on all types of insulation and I am sure they would be happy to discuss it.  If you are in Florida, let me know and I will contact someone else that could assist you.  Brian

---------- FOLLOW-UP ----------

QUESTION: Thanks , sorry you are not familiar with this product, apparently it is used in NASA space suits and spacecrafts, car window shields. firemen's protectiver clothing, insulated coffee mugs and other items. I just want to know how well it works in homes as insulation.  Hope this product comes to your area since you house one our space centers.  the company that presented it to me has a website :  www.energysaverrb.com Mary

Answer
I have seen products similar like radiant barriers.  I would need some 3rd part verifications as to the claims made by this one.  For example, it claims wrapping a water heater will save money.  If you touch the outside of a waterheater, it is cold because it is already insulated.  I would be cautious.  I agree that reflecting heat away from an attic saves money, but there are other products that I bet are cheaper.  Being a Green Builder, I find unless you get a return on your investment through energy savings in 3 - 5 years, it is not worth the investment.  Thanks for the information.  I am always looking for new and improved products to reduce energy costs and consumption.  If you find out more about it, let me know.  I would be grateful.
