About Brian McElroy
Expertise
I am a home builder in the Tampa Florida area specializing in energy-efficient homes built with precast concrete wall systems that are hurricane resistant to 235 mph. I have researched and used many methods of new home construction and find this the most cost-effective, environmentally-friendly method of home building for this area. I am also investigating other alternative methods to improve my products. I am a member of the Florida Green Build Coalition, EPA Energy Star Program, and have other affiliations involving energy savings, safe building practices and quality construction practices

Alternative Housing - Thermasave

Expert: Brian McElroy - 7/27/2006

Question
Hello: What is your take on Thermasave's product, stressed skin/foam core panels? I live in an older stick home which is giving me endless headaches, like sagging rafters, cracked foundation, etc.
These foam core panels seem to me to be the cat's meow.
Thanks

Answer
I have built homes here in Florida with a similar panel system. I loved the insulation values and strength of the product, however, there was a down side. I had a hard time finding competent labor to install them. I also had a hard time finishing the exterior as we are a stucco market rather than a siding or Hardee board market. We used a synthetic product called stucoflex, and it did not finish well at all.  However, siding is a good alternative in an area not prone to hurricanes.

If you can find a good installer, these SIPS are wonderful.  I used them as exteriror wall skins and attached them to 20 gage steel studs. I would caution to be careful and research the fire toxicities. Some put off nasty emmissions when burned. Also, if you are replacing existing elements, make sure you have a competent engineer and HVAC person design in safeguards against condensation and mold.
Best of luck with the panels.
