Alternative Housing - who made my home

Expert: Lemelia Bonner - 5/20/2005

Question
I recently moved into a modular home. How do I find out who the manufacturer was(some one told me to look in the closet of the Master bed room, but I found nothing there) and what are some good books or web sites I can use to learn how to make repairs and improvements.
Thanks
David

Answer
Hello, David

I'm assuming this is a home that someone else had lived in before you rather than one you purchased new. I can't say this for certain, but I don't think there is any identification of a builder on modular homes. You can find this on manufactured homes, but not modulars. And it would even be hard for someone experienced to look at the home and say for certain who manufactured it because the vast majority of these companies use floor plans that are very similar, if not identical. The only thing I can tell you is that the manufacturer is very likely to be close to where you live. People don't purchase modulars at a distance because the cost of shipping would nullify the savings.

A general book on house repairs should be sufficient for you if the home is a true modular. They have to be built to the same specifications as a home constructed on site.
