Question
I had bunion surgery 3 weeks ago. And wanted to know if taking Vitamin C is helpful for healing? Also do sardines have high levels of calcium to help build bone?
Thanks,
Barbara

Answer
Hello Barbara
Thanks for writing.  After surgery, there are several key nutrients that help in healing.  This would be zinc (high in nuts, seeds, whole grains), vitamin C and bioflavonoids (high in citrus fruits, peppers, tomatoes, broccoli, green leafy veggies), and protein (meats, fish, eggs, beans, nuts, seeds).  Supplements are recommended if you can't get adequate amounts from diet.  Of course, a foundation of adequate sleep, movement/ exercise (within limitations of the area), and a diet high in fruits, vegetables, whole grains & legumes, and low in sugars, white flours, processed foods, and caffeine, is crucial no matter which supplements you take.  Sardines are high in calcium, as are dairy products, soy foods, leafy greens, and other veggies like broccoli. Keep in mind that building bone requires more than just calcium, you also need magnesium, manganese, silica, phosphorus, and other trace minerals as well.  So it's best to get a variety of whole foods and a high-quality bone-building supplement to get the full range of nutrients needed.
Have a healthy recovery!
