Question
Hi
Do you know anything about this?
My friend the fitness fanatic says it gives him energy and protects his heart( he had a mild heart attack in 07 ) and he says it helps him keep the weight off as it raises his metabolism.
Its pretty expensive-about $4o for the 'good stuff' that he takes.
Thanks.

Answer
Hello Bud,
Thanks for your question.  CoQ10 is a substance that is produced in the body, and is needed in every cell, but is used more in areas that require high energy (such as the heart).  That is why it helps overall for your friend, but is particulary effective in cardioprotection.  CoQ10 is often low in those who have cardiac disease, other chronic diseases, and those who take statins (and other medications which deplete CoQ10).  It may help in weight management because it facilitates energy production, but it's not a primary reason to take it.  It is expensive, because there are few suppliers of it (most supplement companies buy from the same suppliers of raw materials), and the production is costly.  But for those who have reasons to take it, the costs outweigh the benefits--it is still cheaper than many cardiac meds, the problem is insurance pays for meds but not supplements.
The bottom line is CoQ10 is a helpful supplement for cardiovascular protection, especially if there are already issues in that area (such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, atherosclerosis, etc).
Sincerely,
Dr Conner
