Alternative Medicine/Toenail fungus treatment

Question
Hi, I am hoping you can help me. I think I have had toenail fungus for quite awhile now. This is just on one foot. The toenails are very thick and they are yellow colored with some dark spots in them. Also, this foot is very dry and peeling, while the other is not. I am just curious to know the best thing to use to treat this kind of fungus. Also, I am looking for something that is safe while breastfeeding. I really appreciate any advice you can give me. Thanks!

Jennifer

Answer
Hello Jennifer,
Thanks for your question.  There are some topical treatments that may be helpful, such as tea tree oil, rosemary oil, oregano oil, included in a series of foot baths, or applied topically on the area.  While effective, these don't really get at the cause of the problem, which may be related to dysbiosis, blood sugar dysregulation, poor circulation, and/ or hygiene.  To address these issues, a comprehensive approach would be helpful; you could also do some investigation into possible cause and work on improving these issues yourself.  Altering the diet, by decreasing sugars & refined carbs, and increasing antioxidants from fruits, vegetables, legumes, and whole grains would help with several of these underlying conditions, and is helpful regardless, while also being safe during lactation.  Beyond that, your safest bet would be to consult a naturopathic or holistic doctor in person.
Good luck!
