Alternative Medicine/Chronic Yeast

Question
I am 43,mother of 4, and in good health, eat well, run daily.
Last year, I got my first vaginal yeast infection, and went on to get 1 every other month for a total of 5 in 7 months. They were coming right after I ovulated every month. Saw an acupuncturist, started Phellostatin. Didn't have another one for 5 months. Am also treated with a homeopath ( now on Sulfur)...
Last month, I got one, but this time it was a day before my period.Again, this month, same thing, one day before my period.
It starts with itching, then goes to burning, not much discharge that I can see, however, I think I take the Diflucan as soon as I get that feeling, so maybe it never gets to the discharge point?
I have taken Diflucan,( 1 pill every 72 hours for a total of 2 pills) with good results, but it seems that they keep coming back?
I'm taking Lacidofil and Pau D'Arco as well.
Do you have any suggestions??
I've tried to eliminate sugar, but they still came anyway?
Medically, there is nothing going on, all blood tests are fine, no chronic diseases ( I'm a nurse practitioner, had all bloods drawn)

I would love some suggestions???
Thank you in advance.

Answer
Hello Jane,
Thanks for your questions.  The first thing that comes to mind is to make sure that you are experiencing simply yeast infections.  Sometimes there is more than one type of imbalance going on, such as bacterial vaginosis, which of course an antifungal of any sort will not address.  If it is uncomplicated yeast infections, the most direct way to treat it would be to do a vaginal and/ or GI yeast panel test, from a functional lab company such as Genova.  Blood tests will typically not appear positive without advanced pathology, but the functional lab tests may pick up something sooner.  Plus, they will give a sensitivity not just to drugs, but herbs/ supplements as well.  Along with the proper agent, any steps you can take to minimize yeast growth, such as eliminating unnecessary medications, managing stress well, and maintaining a low glycemic diet will likely eliminate the problem.  The final step would be to restore proper flora balance to prevent such occurences in the future.  A digestive tonic such as the Chinese medicine formula, probiotics (which it sounds like you are taking), and the proper homeopathic remedy will ensure that your body remains healthy.
Since this is a lot to put togther, consider consulting a naturopathic doctor (www.naturopathic.org) in your area if possible.  We are well equipped to guide people through this process, and since naturopathic care is very individualized, it works best to establish a relationship in person.
Good luck!
