Question
I've just been told that my sugar was very high, I've been put on metformin, the dr. told me his way was the only way and might have to put me on another pill, what can I do to prove him wrong  that taking pills that do more harm than the disease does?  I am staying away from carbs, but I do like fruit, do I have to give them up?

Answer
Hi Donna,
One way to avoid or lessen the need for medication for adult onset diabetes is losing weight and increasing your level of exercise. You can eat fruit but you need to get yourself a table of glycemic index of foods. It is not so much what you eat but rather how much of it. Some fruit have a lot of sugar- limit the size of the portions. The same goes for carbs, limit the size of the portions.
Thank you for using Allexperts
