Question
I started taking vitex on 3/7/08 after I started spotting I dont get regular periods I only spot every month, started taking 1200mg daily ever since then I started getting really dizzy and with nausea, em'I taking to much? I want to regulate my periods and also trying to get pregnant, should I take 400mg daily instead?

Answer
Hello Betty
Thanks for writing.  Vitex is an excellent herb for helping to regulate menstrual cycles.  Without knowing your full history, I can't recommend a dosage, but I can tell you what the normal dosages are.  It does depend on the type of preparation.  For the fruit only, 1200 mg is within the normal dosages.  For the extract, 200 mg or more is typical.  If you are in the normal range, you may also react differently than other people, and may need a different dosage or a different herb.  Vitex usually takes 2-3 months to see full effect on the menstrual cycles.  However, because it is not recommended during pregnancy, it's a good idea to discontinue the vitex before trying to get pregnant.
You may want to consult a herbalist or naturopathic doctor locally for more specific guidance.  Good luck,
