Alternative Medicine/EDTA

Question
Hi Dr. Conner,

Do you know about EDTA? What's your educated opinion on it?

If you approve of its' use, what kind of dosage and frequency of use do you recommend with it, orally?

I have a history of heart disease in my family and of people dying young. I'm 42, fit, don't smoke, rarely drink, don't have diabetes or hypertension but have had chest pains for 4 months. Have had diagnosis' of a pulled rib muscle, acid reflux and a recommendation for a stress test (although he didn't see obvious signs of me having heart problems).

Thanks very much,

Michael

Answer
Hello Michael,
Thanks for your question.  I do know of EDTA, but have not used it.  So I could not recommend a specific dosage.  I have used DMSA with some patients, which is similar.  Generally, we use that for 5 days on, 9 days off, or a similar schedule.  This can be for months, while making other changes such as diet, hydrotherapy treatments, supplements/ herbs, and homeopathics.  I do think there is value in cleansing/ elimination of toxins, particularly heavy metals.  However, it's not a treatment to be undertaken without being committed to the sometimes lengthy & complicated process.  And proper guidance, from a holistic MD or naturopathic doctor, is needed also.  I'd seek someone out in your area (www.holistic.org or www.naturopathic.org) for some information on this, and then make a more educated decision.  Even if you do not do the EDTA treatment, there are still many options open to you using natural therapies.  It's a matter of finding the right fit for your individual situation.
Good luck!
Dr Conner
