Question
QUESTION: Hello Dr. Wells,

My hair during the past year or so has been falling out and has been getting extremely fine in texture.  i've always had very thick and voluminous hair up to now.  i am female and up to age 60 my hair was beautiful.  i am now 61 and i'm sure it is not my age.  something is going on as my nails have extreme ridges, hair falling out and my fingers are beginning to get crooked.  i'm not doing something right.  this is not genetic as no one in my family has had anything like this.

i am 5' tall, overweight (150) energy very low lately and thruout day.  as for digestive, i had too many home made smoothies in one day w/o milk and got diahrrea at the end of the diahrrea i got bloody mucus, which seems to happen everytime i get diahrrea which is rare.  otherwise i had a colonoscoy, endoscopy, stomach scan and all came back negative.  this was done last year.  so it seems i'm healthy but still all these things are happening.  please help.

please help

ANSWER: Concerning the hair, I don't have your bloodwork to look at but I would look at supporting the thyroid. I would work with a formula called HSN-W and or Thyroid Support.
Good fats would be beneficial as well. Super Omega 3's would be a good choice.

As for the blood I would need to know if it was very red and dark red?  Any time there is blood I also suggest having a doctor take a look.

QUESTION: thank you so much for your quick response.  as a followup, the blood was encased in mucus, and it was raspberry red.  this only happened when the diarrhea was over and the remaining discharge was very watery.  as i mentioned i don't get diarrhea very often but in this case i overdid it with the fruit smoothies w/o milk.

should i get my thyroid checked?  everytime I do i'm always told it's normal.  i will certainly work with omega 3.  should i also take folic acid and omega 6?

i'm very glad i found this site.  thank you so much.

ANSWER: Red blood can mean hemorrhoids but I always suggest checking with the doctor if there is unexplained bleeding.

Doctors almost always only check TSH which means Thyroid Stimulating hormone which actually has more to do with pituitary than thyroid. It is important to have a compete liver panel done as well as T4 and T3 as T4 coverts to T3 in the liver.  Often times there is a congested liver but a doctor does not look for this.
I would at least work with the HSN-W. It can be hormonal as well, having to do with progesterone issues or even Iron issues.

QUESTION: Dear Dr. Well,

I will ask to be checked for T4 & T3.  I will also try HSN-W.

Thank you so much once again.

Answer
Be sure to have SGOT and SGPT tested as well. If they are 19 or lower you will want to decongest the liver.  A doctor will say this is within range.
