Alternative Medicine/Candida Cleanse

Question
Hello Doctor,
I have a question and I need your advice. I am sure I have a serious problem with yeast overgrowth in my body. I am having all of the symptoms: headaches, urinary tract infections, anxiety, fatigue, etc. I have been to the doctor several times, and he insists that it is mental and tries to put me on an antidepressant. I took the Candida test online and scored a 185 (meaning I answered yes to almost every question). I also performed the saliva test and my spit started growing legs within 30 seconds. I have cut all sugar out of my diet, and I have to admit I do feel better, however not well yet. I was wondering what you recommend for Candida cleansing? I ordered the Threelac online, but after reading reviews, I am not sure if it is safe. Your advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks, Megan

Answer
Hello Megan
Thanks for your question.  It is always best to consult a practitioner in person for individualized advice, because your whole health should ideally be taken into account, and this can really only be done by doing a complete assessment.  The questionnares you mention are a good screening, but since many of the symptoms are not specific to candida overgrowth, it is not 100% definitive.  For a naturopathic doctor in your area I would suggest searching at www.naturopathic.org.
In general, any type of dybiosis (candida overgrowth is one type but there are others, & these can happen concurrently) is best addressed using a combination of diet, supplements/ herbs, and lifestyle changes; to not only decrease current symptoms but restore the body to a place where it won't happen again.  Cutting out sugar, refined carbohydrates, alcohol, and sometimes dairy products is a good start, while increasing whole, organic foods in the diet.  Secondly, an antifungal/ antimicrobial agent can be used, such as oregano oil, garlic, caprylic acid, pau d'arco, or plant tannins (and others, or a combination of these).  Finally, some steps to restore GI balance are needed, such as exercise, sleep, stress management, avoiding food sensitivities, adding fiber, probiotics, digestive enzymes, or other beneficial supplements, and additional steps as needed for individual health.
I am assuming the three lac is a combination probiotic, but I have not used this so I can't speak about its safety or efficacy. However, I have found that the type of approach above is typically safe, and tends to decrease the side effects associated with using some of the supplements alone.
Good luck!
