Expert: Tonja Wells - 11/3/2009
Question I have had chronic constipation since childhood (I'm 53). I have tried everything(drinking extra water, exercise, roughage, Vit c, stool softeners, etc). Non of it worked, or if it worked had uncomfortable side effects. I do not eat sweets (except for fruit)or white flour. I found out about Magnesium and am now taking 900mg daily. It works great and I have never felt better. My concern is: Can taking this much Mag. cause problems that I haven't encountered yet? thank you
Answer Hello Deborah,
Magnesium is the hardest mineral to hang on to. It is the best way to solve constipation issues. I don't know of any side effects or warnings due to taking therapeutic doses of magnesium. Be sure to drink plenty of water with it and take it to bowel tolerance. Adding Proactazyme Plus when you eat meals will also be a good choice. It will break down your foods better and may allow you to take less magnesium. But magnesium can be a great first choice for constipation.
MOST COMMON CAUSES OF CONSTIPATION
If the bowel isn't normal after a few weeks then look deeper to find the underlying cause of constipation and correct it.
1. Lack of water - dehydration causes constipation
2. Not enough fiber.
a. Fiber is no good without water.
b. The National Cancer Institute has published findings that a high fiber diet may have a protective effect against certain forms of canter. Primitive people who eat fiber rich natural foods have extremely regular bowl movements and no sighs of cancer, hemorrhoids, diverticulitis or other bowel diseases.
c. Fiber protects against diabetes, heart disease & obesity.
d. These are the major killers in North America.
3. Lack of muscle tone from no exercise.
4. Lack of HCL and enzymes - Use Proactazyme Plus
5. Liver weakness and gallbladder congestion. Bile is the body's natural laxative.
6. Consider the possibility of emotional causes. Constipation can signal an inability to let go of emotional waste in one's life. (Distress remedy)
7. Heed nature's call - go when you need to. Postponing elimination trains the bowel into habitual constipation.
8. Lack of probiotics in the gut - Use Bifidophilus Flora Force
9. Stress or tight bowel use Magnesium
10. Thyroid issues - Straighten the thyroid
