Alternative Medicine/nasal drip

Question
cat scan and physical exam indicates no sinus involvement in a constant drip into my throat.  The ENT doctor suggests a proton pump inhibiter because he feels the mucus comes up from my stomach.  I prefer a less destructive alternative; any suggestions.  Thank you.

Answer
Hello Frank,
Thanks for your question.  A natural alternative to a PPI is deglycyrrhizated licorice, or DGL.  It does not work by the same mechanism, yet does often help decrease reflux from the stomach, as well as helping the lining of the GI tract heal from damage to the cells.  DGL is typically taken right before meals as a preventative, and can also be taken after if reflux occurs.  Another area you may want to look at are food sensitivities, which are often at the root of excess mucous production in the GI tract.  To do that, you would want to consult a naturopathic doctor or holistic doctor or nutritionist for a full assessment and treatment.
