Alternative Medicine/Combining Chinese Herbals and other methods

Question
Hi,

I am dealing with a veterinarian that emphasizes Chinese herbal medicine.  He specifically states that when using these herbs no other supplements should be combined since they will negate the benefits of the herbals.  Is this true?

Answer
Hi John,

Thanks for your question.  Every doctor has their own opinions, and I would suggest following your doctor's advice.  I personally do not worry so much about the combination vitamins and herbs, but it is true that it can change the effect of the herbs. I also don't treat animals.

Everything we ingest has some sort of medicinal property.  That includes food, water, vitamins, and medicines.  So, in this idea, it is possible the vitamins can interfere with the herbs.  Often, we talk about the properties of food and herbs in terms of hot and cold, what effects it has on the body, so if you doctor is trying to use cooling herbs, and you are taking a warming vitamin, it can contradict the treatment.

Best,
Joe
