Alternative Medicine/Fibroids

Question
Dr. Connor: I am doing everything I can to avoid fibroid surgery. I do not have any pain and there is no obstruction. My doctor told me just to wait it out until menopause...but I am 46 and don't know when that will be. Is there a tea with progesterone or a diet geared to shrinking fibroids naturally so I don't look 4 months pregnant all the time?

Answer
Hello Tracey,
Thanks for your question.  It's not  as easy as a single tea or diet to minimize fibroids, but a holistic approach is often beneficial.  Think of fibroids as a sign that the body is not properly clearing hormones, from stagnation of circulation and slow detoxification processes--resulting in the physical manifestation of fibroids.  So, in order to address this, you need to think about all the ways those natural processes can be improved.  You can improve circulation/ lymph flow through exercise, sweating, massage, yoga for example.  Detoxification occurs all the time, but the more toxins present & the more sluggish the function of the organs of elimination (GI, liver, kidneys, respiratory, skin) the more likely that this process will slow down.  To improve detoxification then you need a whole foods, high fiber diet, plenty of pure water, deep breathing, skin brushing, sweating, exercise, etc.
Working on all of these areas will start to improve elimination, often resulting in a shrinking of fibroids, and there are so many other ways it will benefit your overall health.  Once those things are in place, specific treatments to balance hormones (such as herbal medicines or supplements) can be added for additional effect.  But without addressing the underlying conditions, it is difficult to cause a lasting change.
If you need guidance in this area, I'd suggest seeing a naturopathic doctor in your area (www.naturopathic.org).  We are skilled in helping people through this process, and many of us do concentrate more on women's health issues, as well.  Good luck,
Dr Conner
