Question my daughter has auto immune desease. She is 23yrs. Right now she is on prisecription pills and they don`t seem tobe working and infact the side effect of the pills are making her more sick.We are trying to look for another
Answer Hi Betty.
Your question seems to have been cut off.
Not knowing which of the many autoimmune diseases you are dealing with, I can't give specific advice...the internet is for general information only anyway. Especially since you are asking on behalf of your adult daughter, and it is ultimately her decision about the type of care she receives. Of course, her wishes are the priority in her treatment.
It stopped at "we are trying to look for another" so not knowing another what, I will say a second opinion is generally accepted as a good idea in both the mainstream and alternative health disciplines.
It isn't within the scope of what I do here to comment about autoimmune disease, the medications used for it or the side effects. Those are all mainstream allopathic diagnosis and treatments...you can't make a one to one substitution, and just translate a medical diagnosis into a holistic one, or use herbs as a "natural" substitute for medicines. It just doesn't work that way...kind of like comparing apples and oranges.
If your daughter is interested in using alternative methods to enhance her work with her mainstream doctor, the best thing is a face to face, fresh evaluation with a holistic practitioner. Then they can look at her, her detailed history, and also any emotional/spiritual factors that mainstream medicine may not consider. They would work with her to understand her health from a holistic perspective, and create an individualized plan to help. Often it can be co-ordinated with he mainstream care. To be honest, a lot of times the mainstream guys just won't care because the natural methods seem so insignificant to them, but can make a world of difference to the individual with the autoimmune disease.
There haven't been a lot of reliable scientific studies about autoimmune disease and holistic health care that I have seen. A good place to watch is www.nccam.nih.gov (National Institute of Health's Center for Complimentary and Alternative medicine) It is very technical though, and it you may need someone with a medical background to help you keep the information there in perspective.
The studies I found there are specifically with regard to rhumatoid arthritis and Lou Gehrig's disease and the use of high antioxidant foods such as green tea and pomigranate.
I have heard anecdotally that autoimmune disease responds well to alternative methods, and is one of those chronic diseases where mind-body medicine can be very effective. Especially stress reducing and non-herbal methods like yoga, reiki, meditation...that sort of thing.
Sorry your question was cut off so I couldn't give you more ideas to work with. Also what your daughter wants is key, and you don't mention that in the part of the question that come through.
