Question
if i have a product with 10 ingredients.....one of which is licorice and the amount is 10percent.............how can i find outhow much that is in milligrams?

it also says 6 grams (20 pills)

any idea?

Answer
Hello Girlll,

In Chinese herblism, the measuring of ingredients isn't as strict as in western pharmacology. The best way to determine the amount of licorice in your formula is to look at it from the stand point of 100g total for the entire formula and take 10 of that. For example:

Formula Shen Ling Bai Zhu San
10 ingredients 100g
Ren Shen 15g
Bai Zhu 15g
Fu Ling 15g
Zhi Gan Cao 12g
Shan Yao 15g
Bai Bian Dou 8g
Lian Zi 5g
Yi Yi Ren 5g
Sha Ren 5g
Jie Geng 5g

Gan Cao (Licorice) is approximately 15 of the total formula. Gan Cao is typically a harmonizing herb in the formula and is used in measures of 2-6g. That again depends on the formula and how it is being used as in the above example. I hope I have given you enough of an example to answer your question. I would say however that if you are taking any prescription medications to be cautious in using Licorice as it can interfere with the pharmaceutical action of some medications. Should you have additional questions, please feel free to let me know. Be well.
