Alternative Medicine/Premature Haif Loss
Expert: Glen Aukerman, M.D. - 6/26/2009
QuestionDr. Aukerman, I have a son who experienced alopecia as a freshman in high school after being diagnosed with ADHD and LD. At that time he responded to cortisone injections to these areas of alopecia in the scalp. Getting through high school and college was extremely stressful for him and his struggles seem to continue. He is now taking 20 mg Lexapro daily, but wears a ball cap constantly due to his receding hairline and early balding in crown area. I would like to help him get a thicker head of hair and preserve the hair he has. He is now 32 years old,( is approx 5'11" and weighs approx 178 lbs.) but would be very open to suggestions to help reduce this hair loss. For approximately 3 years he took oral propecia, which seemed to help, but does not like to take drugs unless he is convinced they will not have side effects. Are there supplements you would recommend? Does the expensive Hairmax Laser Comb really work? PLEASE respond, because this hair loss has resulted in considerable loss of self esteem. Are there any foods he should avoid, supplements, treatments you would recommend? ANY SUGGESTIONS you can offer would be so greatly appreciated.
I am a nurse and several of your patients (several cancer survivors) have raved about your expertise in alternative medicine. Do you ever offer seminars open to the public? Thank you so much, Dr. Aukerman. Sincerely, Jan B.
AnswerYes, we do a lot of alopecia work, often associated with autoimmune disorders and cancer
