Alternative Medicine - healing post surgery scars

Expert: Dr. Kristina Conner - 6/9/2009

Question
I am 2 weeks post op from a tummy tuck surgery. Can you direct me to all post surgery holistic approaches via minerals, vitamins, tinctures ect. to aid in scar healing please.

Answer
Hello Charie,
Thanks for your question.
For post surgical healing, pancreatin or bromelain (pineapple enzyme) is often used.  It does need to be an adequate amount, several times a day, away from food, for 4-6 weeks.  Other nutrients needed for proper healing are zinc, vitamin C with bioflavonoids, vitamins E and A (or a high quality multivitamin/mineral).  Making sure you get a whole foods based diet with adequate protein and fluids is essential.  Consider using some homeopathics to stimulate your healing ability.  Arnica is good for any post surgery or trauma; hypericum or Bellis perennis are common, also.  With a homeopathic 12 C dosage, this is taken several times a day.  After a few days, hydrotherapy treatments such as alternating hot & cold packs can be locally applied; these help improve circulation and nutrients to the area.  Topically, vitamin E oil or cream, or Arnica (homeopathic) or Calendula cream yield good results.
If possible, I'd suggest seeing a ND in person for more specific recommendations.  (www.naturopathic.org)
Good luck!
