Alternative Medicine/nerve injury

Question
Doctor, almost one year ago I had double jaw surgery.  I do not know the name of the nerve involved but I have had little return of sensation.  Are their any supplements that would assist in the healing of the nerve in my lower jaw.  The numbness causes me to speak abnormally (chin and lower lip are mostly numb).  I tried homeopathics, and am currently using alpha lipoic acid.  I have read of using gotu kola and ashwaganda.  Can you recommend one or two supplements and a dosage.  Thank you.

Answer
Hello Sherry,
Thanks for your question.  There are some supplements that may be beneficial in restoring nervous system function.  Gotu kola is commonly used, ashwaganda as well, also milky oat seed, lemon balm, and skullcap.  Alpha lipoic acid is probably the most widely used supplement, as well as B vitamins such as B12.  I can't recommend a specific dosage without a full assessment, but I can tell you that many people under-dose when self-prescribing, so you want to make sure you are taking an adequate amount.  With homeopathics, you may have better luck with a constitutional prescription (prescribed by a homeopath) than acute remedies.  Also, consider acupuncture as it can be helpful with this type of problem.
