Alternative Medicine - Omeprazole

Expert: Eric Brandt - 9/20/2009

Question
Hi, I have been on omeprazole for acid reflux for about 3 years, I also have Erectile dysfunction which I put down to my age (50), but I recently saw an article on the internet that says omeprazole can effect my sex drive. Is this right? if so, is there an alternative medication that does not have the same effect. Thanks.

Answer
Hi Gary,
I have dispensed omeprazole for over 20 years to hundreds of patients. Not a single one complained of sexual dysfunction. If it is a side effect it is certainly not a common one. If you do find yourself experiancing this side effect from omeprazole you can ask your doctor to switch to one of the other medications with similar therapeutic effect. These include: lansoprazole and rabeprazole.
Thank you for using Allexperts
Sincerely,
Eric Brandt, B.Sc. Pharm
