Question
Hi,

My mother suffers from an underactive thyroid and is taking thyroxine tablets on a daily basis. Since taking these, she has been suffering with lichen planus in her mouth and has reoccuring cold sores.
Can you suggest a treatment?

Thank you for your time.

Fabienne

Answer
Hi Fabienne,
I do not have a treatment for lichen planus of the mouth. Avoiding tobacco and alcohol can help ease the irritation. Sometimes a steroid can also help. But there is no cure. The cold sores can be prevented with antivirals such  as Valtrex. You need a prescription for Valtrex and the oral steroid.
Thank you for using Allexperts
Sincerely,
