Alternative Medicine - bleeding ulcer

Expert: Baihu - 9/15/2009

Question
i have had a bleeding ulcer for 12 years right now its bugging me alot cause i barely started going to college after 2 years. My back starts to hurt a bit from this, but it only happens when im under extreme stress the problems only occur then i dont know why or what to do about them. I should go to a doc i havent been to one for years because when im not stressed it doesnt bug me cause i also have a severe anxiety disorder so i hardly have gone out but yeah im 24 now....I WANT A LIFE. But i dont want the docs going inside me or catorizing me or touching my insides the doctors inside are very incompatent and 3 of my family members have died 2 of them definatly suffered from incompatence. Thus i dont want them operating me in this city, they have done 2 indocscapies on me but they could have simply done an upper GI or a acid test, the best hospitals are 3 hours a way in san antonio i cant make the trip what should i do if i dont want them inside me but just giving me something? Or what alternative herbs or treatments can i take to heal this ulcer ive tried licorice extract but it seemed to do nothing

Answer
Hello Raul:

Where do you live that you are so afraid of the medical care? Bleeding ulcers can be very serious, and intuitively I find it worrysome that the pain is radiating to your back when it happens. It makes wonder if something very serious might be there...so please as you are able please find a good doctor.

It sounds as though anxiety is a common factor in all this as you yourself observed. College can be stressful under the best of circumstances. In the interim, until you can get to medical care that you are confident in - try to do what you can to manage the stress.

One thing is to prioritize. Do what is most urgent first, then don't pressure yourself about other things. One trait that "type A personalities" share, that seems to make them more prone to stress-induced disease is that it is hard for them to prioritize. Everything seems equally urgent. If you can't do that on your own, there is nothing wrong in getting help from teachers or others to learn to put first things first, and let go of things that aren't important...kind of like that book "don't sweat the small stuff"

Do you know of any Reiki practitioners near you? Reiki is a health and healing system from Japan, and it one of the best things for any sort of stress or anxiety related issue. I think you would benefit from a series of in-person treatments before you try any 'distance' work. You might notice a difference in just one session, but don't be surprised if a series is recommended given how long you have had the ulcer. The more entrenched and old an illness is, the longer it takes to heal in some cases, especially when you are using gentle, natural cures.

Daily meditation is helpful for the stress...it doesn't have to be a long amount of time...even 5 or 10 minutes a day of sitting quietly, doing noting but paying attention to your breathing could be a big help.

Herbs can be used two ways...using allopathic theory, using them as a substitute for mainstream medicines and treatments, where they are used to counteract a particular disease OR herbs can be used in the true holistic way, where they are used to re-balance the whole mind-body-spirit system, to support the body's natural healing. Here, also, talking with someone in person is essential and not something that can be suggested over the internet. A good herbalist would talk to you in much more detail than what you give here, and find one herb or one herb blend that would help stomach, back, anxiety and more all in one totality.

Aromatherapy is a powerful tool, and I am working on making it my specialty. For you, AVOID activating scents like peppermint, citrus and eucalyptus. Instead diffuse calming scents around you like lavender. If you want something less floral and more masculine, then you might want to consider sandalwood or patchuli...especially sandalwood. It is soothing and supports calm and meditation. You can wear the sandalwood oil in a lotion or 'carrier oil'. If you are concerned that it is TOO quieting and find it makes you too relaxed to study...then add a little rosemary (a nice herb-pine scent that blends well with sandalwood). Rosemary aids mental effort without being too stimulating.

Yoga helps both mental and physical wellness.

How well and active are you otherwise? There are some extreme nutritionists that believe fasting with just fruit and fruit-juices for a day or so actually rests the digestive tract leaving the energy that is usually spent on digestion to be spent on healing...but again that isn't something that should be addressed over the internet and I would STRONGLY urge you to work with someone in person, like a ND (naturopathic physician)or a holistic nutrition expert. This kind of fruit only for a day technique can not be used by diabetics, reactive hyperglycemics or others with metabolism issues.

Although you have problems that are better managed by someone in person that can do a proper interview with you, I hope this gives you some ideas that can help ease the anxiety and  by doing so ease the stomach symptoms associated with it. Reiki, aromatherapy, meditation, yoga relaxed stretching exercises anyway) and easily digested foods might be a bridge to help you until you are able to get proper medical evaluation and in-person holistic care.

Best wishes to you. Please keep trying to get good in-person care.
