Alternative Medicine/DGL Licorice & Arthritis

Question
Dear Dr. Conner,  I was taking DGL Licorice to treat an ulcer that was not bacterial(with full knowledge of my family physcian) and I found it very effective.  I also noticed a very marked side effect - it almost completely eliminated symptoms of osteo-arthritis in my hips, knees and hands.  I stopped taking DGL when the ulcer cleared up and after about 2-3 weeks, the osteo-arthritis pain returned in full force.  Is there any information on using DGL Licorice to treat osteo-arthritis?  Is it safe to continue taking 400mg 3 times daily?  I have tried a number of other recommended treatments and that have not been very effective though I am open to suggestions.  MSM and glucosamine have no effect on me whatsoever.   Thanks!

Answer
Hello Deb,
Thanks for your question.  Licorice, of which DGL is a form of, has many beneficial properties, and lowering inflammation is one of these.  It is often included in anti-inflammatory formulas, with other anti-inflammatory herbs, such as ginger, tumeric, boswellia, and bromelain.  Licorice is often safe but can interact with some medications, and may increase blood pressure especially in those who may already have hypertension.  So while it may be relatively safe, I can't say whether it's the best or safest choice for you, or what the optimal dose is for your condition.  If you have a naturopathic doctor or other holistic doctor near you, you'd benefit from some more individualized assessment and treatment, so you might consider that.  If that's not possible, then the best choice is to do research on your own and then proceed slowly in adding in any new supplement.
In health,
Dr Conner
