Questionhi,
i am wondering if there are any herbs(or other natural modalities) that work really well to prevent pertussis and if there is something that works well to cure it? thanks gia
AnswerHello Gia,
General immune support recommendations would apply for prevention and treatment of pertussis, just as with any infection. This would start with ensuring healthy lifestyle (adequate sleep, stress management, exercise, non-smoking, low toxic exposure) and diet (high in water, fruits, vegetables, whole grains, vegetable proteins, and omega 3 & 9 oils, low in processed foods, sugars, alcohol). Supportive nutrients include vitamins C, D, A, E, Zinc, selenium, and any other that might be deficient in the individual. Since pertussis is a bacterial infection, sometimes we may use individual herbs to fight infection. Herbs are best chosen for symptoms, many support the immune system but each is unique in it's specific action. Common ones for immune support include goldenseal, echinacea, garlic, oregon grape root, shitake or maitake mushroom, ginger, and others. Also common & helpful is the use of probiotics to help restore healthy GI function which supports optimal immune health, and homeopathics chosen according to individual symptoms for general stimulation of the body's healing ability.
For more specific recommendations, consider consulting a naturopathic doctor or herbalist in your area for a personal visit.
