Question
I have been trying to conceive for about 10 months. I am 41, I had heard that vitex CAN aid in getting pregnant. I take a high quality brand, the recommended dosage, along with a prenatal vitamin and flax seed oil tablets and vitamin c. I have only been taking the vitex for two weeks two days ago I started my period, it is very light. Brown discharge with a little pink, unusal for me. My question is can vitex cause lighter than normal periods? ( I had an obgyn appt 11 days ago, she did not mention the possiblity of pregnancy so I don't feel that's what it is. Thank you for your time.

Answer
Hello Melinda,
Vitex is commonly used for regulation of menstrual cycles which can often improve chances of conception.  It's also used for PMS and painful periods.  It has a strongeer progesterone-like effect, although it also effects other female hormones.  It takes up to 3 months to see a full effect, and until then there may be some alterations in the cycle.  It's possible that this is a normal transition for you while taking the herb but it is impossible to say without knowing your more.  I would strongly suggest you seek out a ND or holistic MD (www.naturopathic.org or www.holistic.org).  While vitex is generally consider safe, it might not be the best choice for you and since you have a specific goal in mind it's best to find some individual guidance when dealing with the complex endocrine system.  Good luck,
Dr Conner
