Alternative Medicine/Overactive nerves
Expert: Dr. Thomas M.Walter, M.D. - 4/29/2010
QuestionHi,
I was wondering if you can suggest any herbs/alternative medicine that would be helpfull for overactive nerves in the GIT? Also, is there a medical name for this condition, or would it just be called "overactive nerves?" Thanks,
Evan
AnswerHi,
Sorry for my late answer.
It is not actually overactive nerves in the GIT. Even increased abdominal sounds may sometimes be mistaken for overactive nerves in the GIT. Nothing to worry about this condition since it is normal and physiological. Vagus nerve is responsible for the GIT. Activation of the vagus nerve typically leads to a reduction in heart rate, blood pressure, or both. This occurs commonly in the setting of gastrointestinal illness such as viral gastroenteritis or acute cholecystitis, or in response to other stimuli.
The following herbs will be useful to restore the normal functions of the GIT.
1) Licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra) Kindly refer to my paper regarding licorice at:

2) Amla,
3) Belleric Myrobalan and
4) Chebulic Myrobalan
Information about the above said herbs and preparations are available at:

Thanks,
Walter.
