Alternative Medicine/loss of structure in shoulder area near neck

Question
Doctor, I'm an 80 year old female who had hip replacement surgery a little over a year ago. There is a noticeable, depressed area (disappearing mass) on both sides of my shoulder-close to my neck, that I can easily feel with my fingers. My question is what might be causing this, and how can I build back bulk to my shoulder? Are there any exercises that can do this?
Thanks,
Lisa

Answer
Hi Lisa and thanks for writing.  Without a thorough exam it is difficult to tell you for sure what muscles may be changed in your structure.  I would worry less about the appearance of your musculature, and just concentrate on strength and flexibility.  Next time you are at your family doctor or orthopedic surgeon, just ask them to examine the area in question and see what they would recommend.  Good luck.  Dr. S.
