Question
Hi,

I would like to know what vitamins, herbs or other nutrients have shown to possibly be helpful in glaucoma.  I have found some research already concerning Omega 3 fish oils, magnesium and also gingko biloba and was hoping perhaps you were familiar with additional nutrients that seem promising.  Thank you in advance for any assistance you may offer.

Answer
Hello John,
There is some evidence that nutrients may be helpful in prevent and treating chronic glaucoma, but it is always advisble to consult with your opthalmologist also.  Naturopathic treatment will typically consist of an antioxidant-rich diet, avoidance of trans and hydrogenated fats, manage stress and other health conditions, adequate exercise, sleep, and rest, avoid pro-oxidants like smoking, avoid excess caffeine, and a combination of any of these nutrients:  Vitamins C, E, A, B5, Zinc, Selenium, chromium, CoQ10, Magnesium, melatonin, bioflavonoids, and/ or herbs such as Vaccinium myrtillus (bilberry), Gingko, Salvia militiorrhiza (Dan Shen), or Coleus.  Depending on the cause, other nutrients or herbs may be additionally helpful.  For best results consider consulting a ND near you, because only a full assessment will find the remedies best for you.
In health,
