Alternative Medicine/supplements

I was diagnosed as iron deficient, and took an iron supplement for a month and a half, until the bbottle was gone. Now I just bought a multivitamin and didn't realized it had iron it. Iwould also like to take chlorella as well. Will there be a problem with iron? Toxicity?
Thank you, Carol

Hello Carol:
Iron deficiency anemia is the most common nutritional deficiency and anemia in the world. The only way to know if one is toxic from taking iron is to draw laboratory work that includes: ferritin, serum iron and total iron binding capacity and iron saturation. Chlorella is useless for correcting iron anemia and may actually worsen it...but I think it is just not important for iron anemia. The cause of iron anemia must always be determined before one supplements with iron as excessive amounts can cause many health problems including, but not limited to, cancer and cardiovascular disease.  A multivitamin contains only a small amount of iron so one probably has no reason to worry. Rechecking of blood levels of iron, and especially ferritin (a test for iron storage, is most important.

Hope this helps,
