Alternative Medicine/Books

Hi Sharon,

Thank you for taking the time to answer my question. My father is trying to put together a disaster kit. He would like a book about alternative medicine. Something that shows how to use herbs to cure ailments. He heard on the radio recently that people could make penicillin if needed. He would like something that will teach / show him how this is done in case something horrible happens.

I have looked over the books at Amazon and I am lost on which one I should purchase or even which one would be something to what he would want.

Thank you again for taking time out of your busy day to answer my question.

Hi Suzie
You are quite right - this is an enormous area.  Many of the resources are designed for clinicians, rather than home remedies.  However, James A. Duke has produced some good ones, including "The Green Pharmacy Herbal Handbook".  Another, quite useful book, is "the Nature Doctor" by Dr A. Vogel.
Essential oils are also great first aid items - they won't go mouldy like herbs can: "Essential Oils: A Health Care Guide on Using Essential Oils for First Aid and Illness" by Lisa Lyda may be useful.
I hope this helps.
