Alternative Medicine/Detoxification

Question
Dr. Conner,
I recently viewed an episode of Living Fresh where you discussed detoxification and wanted some additional information. I am assuming that the supplements needed depends on the individual, but are there some general guidelines I could follow, or should I consult a local physician?

Thank you,
Terry

Answer
Hello Terry,
Thanks for your question and for watching Living Fresh!  A detoxification program, especially the first time, should be fairly simple, with more emphasis on diet rather than supplements (safer, less expensive, easier).  So following an organic whole foods hypoallergenic diet consisting of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, and sometimes animal protein like fish is the center of a good detox. (cutting out foods like sugar, alcohol, dairy, corn, soy, and wheat).
Exercise, breathing exercises, skin brushing, massage, and/ or hydrotherapy should be a part of that, as well.  Supplements are to assist in this process, and reduce side effects.  Most people will need a multivitamin, essential fatty acid like fish oil, fiber supplement like flax seed, and a liver lipotrophic formula (with herbs like dandelion root, milk thistle, and nutrients like choline, methionine).  Extra antioxidants and extra protein may be needed depending on food choices, too.
There are some pre-packaged detox programs which are great for the first time, and most of these will contain most of what you need (may need to add a EFA and multivitamin also).  The best brands for these kits are Enzymatic Therapies, Gaia, or Nature's Way.
If you are in good health and follow the guidelines, a simple detox program can be done very safely.  If you have a naturopathic doctor in your area (look one up at www.naturopathic.org), that would be the best person to consult with for more guidance.  Especially if you have any particular health conditions or concerns with doing a detox program.  Some chiropractors may be helpful, also.  Unfortunately most MDs know little about these types of programs so they are not the best source of information.
Good luck!
