Alternative Medicine - Flower Essences

Expert: jackie barr - 2/27/2004

Question
Dear Ms. Barr, Any experiences with flower essences?  Helpful or not, in your opinion?  What is the best way to use, if you believe they have merit?  Which would you recommend for depression and grief?  Thanks much!

Answer
Hi Carol

Yes, I am a firm believer in the use of flower essences.  I have used many different ones for medical reasons and also emotional reasons over the years.

I've enjoyed using flower essences for several years - in the form of bach flower remedies. For myself, it has helped remove the trama of wounds as well as help ease emotional disturbances. Here are some of the remedies I've used and how they helped me.

Rescue remedy: really helps remove trauma. (Not meant to take the place of medical treatment.) This is the one which gets used the most.

Aspen: to help decrease vague anxiety/fears

Elm: to help with feelings of inadequacy

Impatiens: to help with patience

Larch: for self confidence

Olive: for mental & physical exhaustion

Rock Water: to help one be less strict with themselves
Star of Bethlehem: to ease grief, trauma, and loss.

Sweet Chestnut: to help ease overwhelming grief and anguish.

Oak: to help those who never give up

Pine: to help decrease self criticism

Walnut: to help with transitions

I use these remedies homeopathically. That is, I take a few drops in a glass of water and sip every few minutes as condition eases. I am NOT a practitioner of Flower Essences. However, I feel that using it in my life has made my environment much nicer.

Flower essences change negative emotions to a positive. If you are going through a difficult time with depression, anxiety, grief, excess worrying, or stress, give flower essences a try.

I am listing some of the different essences you can use but there are literally hundreds and combinations that work very well for grief and depression.

Star Of Bethlehem-For the effects of shock, serious news, grief and sorrow. The positive aspect of the remedy is the relief of shock and return to calmness to the mind. Easing shock straight away helps to prevent what might otherwise cause a delayed reaction.

ToeToe is used when a person is in deep despair, feeling like they are falling. This flower essence will catch one and lift one out of a hole. Helps give one the strength to stand tall (like the Toetoe plant in the wind), and beat the adversity one believes is in one's life.

Echium is for hopelessness and despair, giving up.
The blue flowers, like the blue sky, are full of promise.
Buoyed up with hope and life.

Chrysanthemum is used for the feeling helpless - like the sun going down. Brings the new dawning, full of promise and vigour.

Gentian for depression is absolutely wonderful and I have given this to many of my friends over the years. Gentian ...is the remedy for people who have given up belief that there is any hope for them.

If you need added information--let me know.

Take Care
Jackie
