Alternative Medicine/Help!!!!!
Expert: Dr. Kristina Conner - 9/26/2007
QuestionYes I am almost 28 years old and my medical problems include Schizophrenia, bipolar, obesity, and finally hair thinning. This started about 13 or 14 years ago the hair loss I mean. I don't need another kick to my self esteem. And I could use some help. I am eating better than I was, I take Geodon, Lithium, and Zoloft. I do smoke for almost 10 years now tried to quit but I apparently do not handle stress very well. I need to get a handle on at least the hair loss.
AnswerHello Nicole
Thanks for writing in. It is wonderful that you are seeking out alternatives. Hair loss is a troubling symptom, so I can understand wanting to work on this. These are some of the common reasons for hair loss in someone your age: anemia, hypothyroidism, poor nutrition/ poor absorption, or a skin condition like seborrhea or fungal infection. The first and last of these are fairly easy to diagnose with a visit to your PCP and a blood test. Hypothyroidism can be diagnosed with a blood test, yet many people still exhibit symptoms with normal blood tests. An experienced naturopathic or alternative doctor could help you throught that assessment & treatment if needed. However, none of these may be going on, and it may be due to a combination of stress and poor nutrition or absorption. Regardless of what medications you are on, or other health conditions are present, there are always some basics that you can work on. This includes a mostly whole & organic foods diet (low on sugar, caffeine, processed foods; high in veggies, fruits, whole grains, legumes, and moderate in everything else). Also, adequate sleep and exercise. Stress management, healthy emotional expression, and a fulfilling home and work life. The easiest way to let go of smoking as a coping mechanism is to add other options first, then try to quit. So it may be time before you are able to do that. But it is something you want to move away from (as you know), and find a healthier way to manage stress, whatever works for you. It is more effort but making all of the positive changes is worth it. When you establish a healthy foundation, many symptoms like the hair thinning may go away, and you will notice the benefits in other areas of your life, also.
Good luck as you search for options.
