Question Good Day,
I have a 3 year old girl that is Iron Deficient and takes 2 ml of Iron drops a day. Because of this she is constipated and when she does have a bm (every other day) it is very large (1 1/2 to 2" diameter 4-6 inches long) and compacted causing pain. Is there anything I can do to help her with either issue?

Do you know why she's anemic? Does she eat meat everyday?
Was she raised on iron fortified formula or cows' milk? After your child is 12 months old, if you stop breastfeeding or using iron-fortified formula, you should feed your toddler meat, chicken, fish, whole grains, enriched bread and cereal, dark green vegetables, and beans. Vitamin C is also important because it helps the body absorb iron. You should limit your child to less than 24 oz of cow's milk per day. (That's 3 cups of milk.) You might try giving your child yogurt and cheese. You also may want to continue giving vitamins with iron. They sell vitamins with probiotics--live bacteria such as acidophilus that would be good, especially if they are chewable ones that say "extra C."
The large bm's are actually normal in someone her age. My grandson's are large, too. Buy some aloe vera gel in capsules or in a bottle; for internal use. Each day, stick a needle in the end of the capsule and squirt it in flavored yogurt and stir or use a teaspoon of aloe. Make sure she has "iron fortified" cereals. Aloe vera should be refrigerated; use it in anything in which she'll eat it like in a smoothie. Put frozen fruit, water or iron fortified formula in a blender with the aloe vera between meals as a snack or for breakfast with her cereal. Do a search on "food for kids with iron."
