Question
Eric
I am 48.Although I am a heavy drinker,I dont eat much and exercise a lot.
I cant lose the big belly.Do you think the years of alcohol abuse have damaged my liver, causing the inability to lose the gut?
If I stop drinking, will it repair itself and how long will it take?

Answer
Hi Barry
Years of heacy drinking may have damaged your liver. We can measure liver function with a simple blod test. You can ask your doctor to order the test at a medical lab.
The belly is more likely from lack of execise an too many calories. You can get ascites from liver damage due to alcohol abuse. Your doctor can assess if this i the case.
The liver does have a limited capacity to repair itself and compensate for physical damage. The extent to which it can recover depends on the degree of damage.
Thank you for using Allexperts
Sincerely,
