Alternative Medicine - PREMARIN

Expert: Eric Brandt - 3/10/2004

Question
I had my yearly checkup and all has been good for 78 years and this past check up my liver count was slightly up. They did hepatitius tests and all negative.  To months later tests again and still the same. Ultra sounds all Ok and still count stayed the same.  The doctor took me off of Premarin which I have been on for 30 years, said I don't need it. (I am suffering with hot flashes now at my age) is that normal. Would Premarin have anything to do with elevating my liver test slightly.? How about Red Yeast Rice, I was taking that for a short period.? Appreciate  your response. Thanks A MIllion .   Doris

Answer
Hi Doris,
Taking estrogens such as Premarin can affect liver function tests. The Laboratory should have been told you are on this medication when the sample was drawn for the test.
I do not know how Red Yeast Rice would affect liver functions.
Having stopped Premarin would explain why you are now experiencing hot flushes.
Taking Premarin replaces lost estrogen during menopause and avoids menopausal symptoms. Now that you are not taking Premarin, your estrogen levels are low which is causing the hot flushes.
Thank you for using Allexperts
